SKT launches SK Hyper, steps up AI data centre expansion
SK Telecom is setting up SK Hyper, a specialised unit for AI data centre business development, and will invest 750 billion won by 2030. It plans to build 15 gigawatts of infrastructure by 2035 in step with a government mega project. SKT approved the plan at a board meeting on July 23. SK Hyper will support site acquisition, substation operations and customer recruitment.

SKT steps up AI data centre push, sets up CEO-led taskforce
SK Telecom has set up a dedicated organisation reporting directly to its chief executive to support an AI data centre construction project that is part of the government’s “three mega projects”. The company created an “AI DC Integrated Promotion Taskforce” and appointed Jeong Seok-geun as head. The taskforce includes business development and engineering teams. SKT oversees SK Group’s 15 gigawatt AI data centre plan, aiming for phased openings from 2029 and expansion to 15 gigawatts by 2035.

SKT to roll out proprietary AI model at manufacturing sites
SK Telecom said on Wednesday it will begin applying its self-developed proprietary AI foundation model at manufacturing sites. The company signed strategic MOUs with steelmaker KG Steel and auto parts maker Konec to pursue on-site demonstrations of AI agents based on the model. SKT said it developed a demo of a manufacturing-focused AI agent using data such as past process error reports, equipment manuals and logs, built on its A.X K1 model.
