SK Telecom appointed Jung Seok-geun (정석근), head of its artificial intelligence (AI) corporate-internal company (CIC), as its new chief technology officer (CTO).
According to SKT on Sunday, Jung was recently assigned to take on CTO duties alongside his current post. The CTO oversees the company’s technology strategy and overall research and development (R&D).
Earlier, SKT launched the AI CIC in September last year to consolidate its AI capabilities. It jointly appointed Yu Kyung-sang (유경상), chief strategy officer (CSO), and Jung, then head of the GPAA business division, to lead it.
Jung, a former head of Naver’s Clova CIC, has led AI technology development, global investment and the building of core infrastructure since joining SKT. He has also led a government project to develop an independent AI foundation model in which SKT is participating as part of a consortium.
SKT’s large-scale AI model, A.X K1, passed a first evaluation last month and is pushing to evolve into a multimodal system that can comprehensively understand text, photos and video.
Jung is expected to oversee SKT’s overall AI strategy, including AI model development, the building of AI data centres and the company’s internal AI transformation (AX) strategy.
