National AI Strategy Committee discusses government-wide AI legislative framework centred on AI Basic Law

South Korea\'s National AI Strategy Committee will set a government-wide legislative direction centred on the AI Basic Law to meet rising demand for AI-related legislation after the law takes effect. It discussed a draft AI legislative framework at its fifth Chief AI Officer meeting in Seoul on Oct. 2. The framework sets four basic directions, including closing defence and security legislative gaps and improving predictability for businesses. Officials also reviewed preparations for the \'AI for Everyone\' service due for formal nationwide launch in December.

Kakao steps up AI ethics governance, launches external advisory panel

Kakao said on Wednesday it has launched an external advisory panel under its AI and technology ethics subcommittee to strengthen its AI ethics governance. The move aims to pre-empt potential social risks from the spread of agentic AI and to establish internal policies in line with fast-changing domestic and international environments, including Korea’s AI basic law and global AI safety regulation. The panel consists of seven external experts spanning academia, law and an international organisation.

The panel is expected to focus on securing budgets and setting investment priorities for government AI projects, ensuring power supply for AI data centres and chip plants, and overhauling broadcasting and telecom rules. It is also set to debate regulation of false and manipulated information, follow-up work on the AI basic law and media fund financing.
