Korea exports hit record $709.7 billion in 2025 on semiconductor boom

South Korea’s exports rose 3.8 percent in 2025 to a record $709.7 billion, surpassing the previous high set in 2024. Semiconductor exports climbed 22.2 percent to a record $173.4 billion, supported by a global artificial intelligence boom. Imports slipped 0.02 percent to $631.7 billion, producing a $78.0 billion trade surplus. December exports rose 13.4 percent to $69.57 billion, the highest for any December.

SK Chairman Chey Tae-won urges staff to ride AI wave and take on 'Seungpungparang' challenge

SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won called on employees to take on a “Seungpungparang” challenge spirit in 2026 by riding the wave of artificial intelligence innovation and overcoming global market turbulence. In a New Year message sent by email, he praised efforts to strengthen fundamentals through portfolio rebalancing and operational improvements. He said SK’s long-running focus on memory chips, ICT, energy solutions and batteries has prepared it for the AI era and urged development of integrated AI solutions across affiliates.

Retail investors post record net selling despite KOSPI rally last year

South Korean retail investors were net sellers of 26.37 trillion won in the KOSPI market last year, the largest annual outflow on record, even as the index surged and led G20 stock market gains. Foreign investors recorded the highest returns, with the top 10 stocks they net bought averaging a 201.6 percent gain versus 88.0 percent for retail. Institutions were net buyers, led by SK hynix and Samsung Electronics.
