One team nears elimination in Korea sovereign foundation model project as jockeying intensifies

The South Korean government will soon publish first-round assessment results for its domestic foundation model development project. The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to complete the first evaluation by Jan. 15 and eliminate 1 of 5 consortia. The project will conduct reviews every six months, narrowing teams to 3 by June 2026 and selecting a final 2 by December 2026. Ahead of the evaluation, firms have clashed over “from scratch” development criteria.

Upbit launches event with Cashnote to support small business owners

Dunamu, which operates crypto exchange Upbit, said on Jan. 13 it will run a "2026 Boss Success Support Event" to help small business owners manage their operations. The event is held with small business management service Cashnote and is the second campaign under the "Upbit Cheer Up!" project launched late last year. New users completing KYC receive bitcoin worth 50,000 won and a one-month CashnotePlus membership. Eligible existing users get two months free.

Solum unveils 32-inch large e-paper display lineup

Solum unveiled a large e-paper display lineup ranging from 25.3 inches to 32 inches at NRF 2026 in New York, it said on Jan. 13. The company said the products are designed to digitally replace posters and promotion boards in high-value retail categories. Solum also said it is building an open collaboration ecosystem via its SOLUM Solution Platform and showcased real-time integrations with Simbe Robotics, Competera and Upshop.
