LG Uplus posts record Q2 operating profit, says enterprise infrastructure drove gains

LG Uplus said it posted a record quarterly operating profit in the second quarter, helped by growth in its AI data centre business and cost efficiency. Revenue fell 3.9 percent from a year earlier, but service revenue rose 2 percent and operating profit climbed 13.1 percent. The company said enterprise infrastructure revenue increased, including AI data centre sales. Mobile and smart home revenue also rose, and it announced additional share buybacks and a higher interim dividend.

DB HiTek to transfer used equipment free of charge to public nanofabs

DB HiTek will transfer idle used semiconductor equipment free of charge to nanofab institutes participating in the MoaFab platform, the Ministry of Science and ICT said. The equipment will be used for core semiconductor process R&D and technology demonstration support. An 8-inch high-temperature heat-treatment deposition tool will be installed at the National Nanofab Center, and an 8-inch dry etching and surface-coating tool will go to the Nano Convergence Technology Institute.

Science ministry launches pilot projects using homegrown AI chips

South Korea will begin 22 pilot projects using homegrown AI semiconductors in areas including robots, security and urban safety, the Ministry of Science and ICT said. The ministry held a joint kickoff briefing on Aug. 5 for three demonstration programmes, covering AX device development and testing, support for rapid commercialisation of AI applications, and on-device AI service trials and expansion. It will also pursue seven physical AI demonstration tasks through next year.
