Korea to add 8 non-capital universities to AI hub programme

South Korea will expand support for artificial intelligence talent development at regional universities by adding eight non-capital-area schools to its AI hub university programme this year, the Ministry of Science and ICT said on May 28. The ministry will also push an AI Star Fellowship focused on regional universities to strengthen research capabilities among early-career researchers. Selected universities will receive funding for up to 8 years, while fellowship projects will be supported for up to 6 years.

South Korea pilots always-on vulnerability reporting and remediation scheme

South Korea will launch the country’s first pilot programme for a security vulnerability reporting, remediation and disclosure scheme, aimed at building a safe and transparent security ecosystem. The initiative includes a vulnerability disclosure policy and a coordinated vulnerability disclosure policy. Fifteen organisations, including 7 companies and 8 public bodies, will participate. Applications open May 29 to June 12, with hacking and reporting running to November and results disclosed at year-end.

MSIT releases draft AI ethics principles, seeks public feedback until July

South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Information Society Development Institute said on May 28 they had prepared a draft of artificial intelligence ethics principles and would begin collecting public 의견 from May 29. The draft inherits the 2020 government-wide AI ethics standards and reflects enforcement of the AI Basic Act and changes in technology and the social environment. It sets three core values and six principles and seeks feedback until July 8 via an online channel.
