U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (엘리자베스 워런) has demanded that Meta disclose details of its plans related to its push to adopt an external stablecoin.
The Block reported on Thursday that Warren sent a letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, urging Meta to be transparent about a plan to integrate an external stablecoin into its social media ecosystem in the second half of 2026.
Warren said Meta is currently conducting a small test using an external stablecoin, and said the move could undermine financial stability and consumer privacy for its 3.5 billion users. She described the move as Meta’s second attempt related to stablecoins, following Libra, which fell through due to pushback from regulators in each country.
Warren argued that if Libra had actually launched, Meta could have collected transaction data for its advertising business and effectively functioned like a private central bank. She warned that if currency instability emerges, taxpayers could end up having to prop up the system, as with other private stablecoins.
