Batteries gain ground as AI data centre power strains make them cheaper than gas turbines

Battery energy storage systems are becoming a lower-cost option than natural gas turbines as power demand from AI data centres surges, according to an analysis cited in the report. Wood Mackenzie said four-hour batteries were cheaper than open-cycle gas turbines in all 43 markets it studied, while turbine prices rose and delivery times lengthened. Solar was the cheapest new power source, and pairing solar with batteries can add flexibility.

Samsung Electronics joins apartment heating and cooling electrification push, seeks nationwide rollout from 2028

Samsung Electronics is entering the electrification market for heating and cooling in apartments and other multi-family housing. The company announced a carbon-reduction plan based on its EHS All-in-One heat pump at a K-GX strategy briefing in Seoul. It plans to launch the product this year, establish a domestic supply base by 2027 and begin nationwide distribution in 2028 to 2029. Field demonstrations are under way, with plans for standards and partner training.
