Illinois governor warns AI could be as dangerous as nuclear weapons

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker (JB Pritzker) described AI as a technology that can drive medical innovation but could be as dangerous as nuclear weapons. He said self-regulation by AI companies is unlikely to solve privacy protection and safety concerns and urged active government intervention. Pritzker warned unemployment could rise quickly from 4 percent to 7 to 10 percent as AI spreads and said federal standards are needed.

FBI busts North Korean fake remote hiring network, dismantles laptop farms

North Korean IT workers stole or forged U.S. identities to win remote jobs at American companies and sent the proceeds to the North Korean regime, the FBI said. The FBI described the activity as an international crime threatening national security and launched a large crackdown. Five worst-case scenarios if AI wipes out humanity

Artificial intelligence could threaten humanity through scenarios ranging from losing control to a superintelligence to bioweapons, nuclear war and social collapse. The more realistic risk may be society destabilising itself as mass unemployment, disinformation and political polarisation intensify, rather than AI suddenly attacking humans. University of New South Wales AI researcher Toby Walsh laid out five scenarios and said assessments should consider both current AI capabilities and real-world social impact.
