Europe steps up battle to cut reliance on US big tech as cloud law, political tensions intensify

European governments are expanding efforts to reduce reliance on U.S. software and cloud services and shift to European “sovereign technology.” The trend is linked to concerns over the 2018 U.S. CLOUD Act, which can require U.S. firms to provide access to data stored abroad. U.S. CLARITY Act controversy grows, industry fears expanded financial surveillance

As debate resumes in the U.S. Congress over the digital asset market structure bill known as the CLARITY Act, concerns are growing inside and outside the crypto industry about expanded financial surveillance. Galaxy Digital research head Alex Thorn warned the current language could widen oversight powers, including for the Treasury’s OFAC. Critics including Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson say the wording is too broad and could be abused.

Bamito Wi moves to block illegal tracker device sales

The Broadcasting Media and Telecommunications Commission said on Thursday it will strengthen online platform self-regulation and conduct inspections to curb the distribution of illegal location trackers used for stalking and other violent crimes. It plans to display warning messages on major shopping sites and send caution notices on second-hand trading platforms. The commission will also check about 3,200 location information businesses and seek crackdowns on illegal devices with the science ministry.
