Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (창펑 자오) reaffirmed his support for major cryptocurrencies including XRP, Zcash and Solana despite controversy over Solana’s expansion in China. U.Today, a blockchain media outlet, reported on Oct. 16 that he said he supports the spread of blockchain itself regardless of any specific network.
In a recent post on X, Zhao said he always supports progress by any blockchain in any country. He listed bitcoin, ethereum, BNB, XRP, SOL, HYPE, ZEC, SIGN and stablecoins as digital assets he is optimistic about.
The remarks came shortly after Solana’s push to expand in Shanghai ran into setbacks. Solana unveiled a new office in Shanghai earlier this week and also ran a large-scale advertising campaign. Zhao said at the time that Solana’s advertising and physical presence in Shanghai could become a pathway for other blockchain projects to enter. He also mentioned that the move could be a signal of easing cryptocurrency regulation in China.
But a Solana event scheduled to be held at the Shangri-La Hotel in Shanghai was postponed on Oct. 16. There were claims that attendees encountered law enforcement authorities at the venue, and organisers said they delayed the schedule for logistical reasons. Solana Foundation President Lily Liu (릴리 리우) later said registrations suddenly quadrupled, exceeding the number reported in advance to local authorities.
Online speculation later surfaced that Zhao’s earlier remarks may have drawn the attention of Chinese authorities. He denied it and said Solana advertisements on a Shanghai building were reported to have been removed within 10 minutes. He also said he only learned of the advertisement 12 to 24 hours after it appeared, arguing it was not possible that his X post led to its removal.
