The Broadcasting Media Communications Commission reported major policy results in broadcasting, media and telecommunications at a cabinet meeting on Monday, marking the first anniversary of the launch of the People’s Sovereignty government. The commission said it has pursued policies aimed at clearing issues accumulated over two years and realising media sovereignty and a basic society. It cited broadcaster relicensing, decree revisions, measures on public responsibility, handset subsidy rules, World Cup joint broadcasts, platform obligations and home-shopping reforms.

Whole-of-government voice phishing response cuts cases, losses for seven straight months
South Korea’s government said voice phishing cases and losses fell for seven straight months through April after a whole-of-government response. It said cases dropped to 9,353 from 14,461 a year earlier, while losses fell to 493.6 billion won from 763.2 billion won. Measures included an integrated response team, emergency phone-number blocks and an AI information-sharing platform. Authorities also expanded enforcement, arrests and asset recovery.

Voice spam doubles in 2025 H2 after mobile handset subsidy law repeal
The Korea Communications Commission and the Korea Internet & Security Agency on May 14 released data on spam distribution in the second half of 2025. A survey of 3,000 mobile phone and email users aged 12 to 69 found average monthly spam received per person rose to 10.35 messages, up 30.8 percent from the first half. Voice spam doubled, while text spam and related reports and detections fell sharply.
