Four major financial groups\' Q1 results split as AI, digital finance spread
South Korea\'s financial sector has entered the first-quarter earnings season, with non-interest income and non-bank units driving diverging results among major financial holding companies. KB Financial Group, Shinhan Financial Group and Hana Financial Group posted record results, while Woori Financial Group recorded a decline. Strong stock markets lifted securities firms\' earnings, and new savings and investment products were launched. The industry is also accelerating a shift toward AI and digital finance, alongside calls for stronger controls and risk management.

KB leads, Woori posts decline as non-bank units drive Q1 results for top four financial groups
First-quarter results at South Korea\'s four biggest financial holding groups were decided by non-interest income and the competitiveness of non-bank units, with net interest income holding steady. A stock market recovery and money flows lifted fees and capital markets earnings, widening performance gaps. Combined net profit rose 8.1 percent from a year earlier to 53.3 trillion won, topping 50 trillion won for the first time. KB Financial remained No. 1, while Woori Financial was the only group to post a decline due to one-off factors.

Woori Financial posts 603.8 billion won Q1 net profit, down 2.1 percent
Woori Financial Group said on April 24 its first-quarter net profit fell 2.1 percent from a year earlier to 603.8 billion won, citing reduced securities and foreign-exchange related gains amid heightened market volatility linked to Middle East conflict and one-off provisions tied to overseas units. Net operating revenue rose 5.6 percent to 2.76 trillion won, supported by higher interest and non-interest income. Costs increased and asset-quality indicators weakened, while its CET1 ratio improved to a record 13.6 percent.
