Nvidia speeds up development of world-class open-weight model to compete with China
Nvidia is accelerating efforts to lead technological advances in open-weight models. It recently signed a $6 billion licensing deal with coding AI startup Poolside that includes hiring most of its engineers, and will also invest $1 billion at a $12 billion pre-money valuation. The Wall Street Journal reported Nvidia will use Poolside to speed development of a world-class open-weight model to compete with Chinese AI companies.

Why Nvidia wants to develop even large AI models itself
Nvidia is speeding up its push to develop and distribute its own open-source AI models as part of an effort to expand hardware demand, although some see a risk of competition with AI companies that buy its chips. The Information reported Nvidia is developing the open-source large language model Nemotron 4 with at least 1 trillion parameters. Nvidia has also rolled out lightweight models and free routing software and increased spending on computing resources through cloud contracts.

Nvidia is developing the open-source large language model Nemotron 4 as it steps up investment in open-source AI models, The Information reported, citing sources involved in the work. The model is expected to have more than 1 trillion parameters, about twice the size of Nemotron 3 Ultra released in June. The company is also releasing Nemotron 3.5 Lightning and free model-routing software.
