Google sends satellite carrying TPU into space; launch costs key

Google has sent a demonstration satellite carrying its TPU chip into space for the first time to test an orbital data centre concept. The Planet Labs-built satellite will check whether the TPU can operate in space, including continuous 1 kW power supply, chip cooling and errors while running models. The company’s longer-term plan envisions 81 satellites flying in formation for parallel computing, but it says the concept requires significantly lower launch costs.

California governor vetoes bill to regulate secret recording with smart glasses

California\'s plan to separately regulate covert filming using smart glasses and other wearables has been blocked after Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed Senate Bill 1130. The bill would have banned recording audio or video with wearable devices without explicit consent in workplaces or places where people reasonably expect privacy. Newsom said the rules were overly broad and could create confusion, adding that existing law already punishes illegal filming and secret recording.

DoorDash launches AI agent for text message food orders

DoorDash has launched an AI agent that lets users order food using text messages in Apple Messages. TechCrunch reported on Sept. 30 that DoorDash is taking waitlist sign-ups for the feature for U.S. users. The agent can place orders based on a user’s past order history, respond to requests for specific items, and suggest carts after searching nearby restaurants. It can also accommodate different preferences and quantities for group orders.
