Naver and Kakao draw attention with contrasting leadership overhauls
South Korea’s two biggest platform companies, Naver and Kakao, carried out contrasting organisational overhauls at the start of 2026. Naver is expanding leadership by adding three new C-level executives and moving to a six-member team from Feb. 1, aiming to speed decisions across expanding businesses. Kakao is reducing the size and authority of its group control tower, the CA Council, after restructuring cut the number of affiliates to 94 from 147.

Chinese tech firms are accelerating expansion in the AI market, with Baidu’s Ernie Assistant topping 200 million monthly active users and Kuaishou’s Kling AI reporting 12 million users and more than $20 million in monthly revenue. Alibaba unveiled a major update to its Qwen app. Startups also pressed ahead, including DeepSeek and Moonshot AI. In South Korea, a government-led foundation model project advanced three teams to the next stage and plans an additional selection.

Team Naver, Bank of Korea build dedicated AI platform for central bank
Team Naver and the Bank of Korea said they have completed and begun operating BOKI, a dedicated generative AI service specialised for finance and economics. The companies said it is a private-public AI platform designed for the high-security central bank environment and is the first case among global central banks to build and apply an in-house AI platform at the operational stage.
