Nissan expands AI robots at U.S. Smyrna plant, shifting parts hauling work handled by 64 workers
Nissan is expanding automation of parts transport at its Smyrna, Tennessee plant by deploying AI-based autonomous mobile robots. The project, described as the plant’s largest cost-cutting task this year, would replace work now handled by 64 forklift and tugger drivers. Robots from OTTO, a Rockwell Automation unit, use lidar, cameras and sensors to navigate and adjust schedules in real time. Nissan plans to phase deployment in six steps, keep backup systems, and reassign affected workers.

Rockwell Automation Korea appoints Kim Nak-hyun as new president
Rockwell Automation said on Aug. 13 it has appointed Kim Nak-hyun (김낙현), head of its Industry & OEM sales division, as the new president of Rockwell Automation Korea. Kim joined the company in 2004 as a software product manager and later held roles spanning domestic OEM sales and Asia-Pacific responsibilities in safety, smart devices, and manufacturing and assembly industries. Most recently, he led domestic sales and drove growth across industries including autos, EV batteries, tires, chemicals, semiconductors and life sciences.

Manufacturing digitisation needs OT know-how, not just IT, Rockwell executive says
Competition is intensifying between IT companies and operational technology (OT) specialists as manufacturers push digitalisation, with each side expanding into the other’s territory. Rockwell Automation, known for industrial automation solutions such as PLCs, is accelerating efforts to internalise digital capabilities rather than outsource them. A Rockwell Automation Korea executive said manufacturing digitisation requires deep OT understanding to be effective and to reduce risks. The company’s strategy focuses on digital twins, data analytics, AI and OT security.
