Privacy watchdog recommends improving face authentication for mobile phone activation

South Korea\'s Personal Information Protection Commission recommended that the Ministry of Science and ICT improve its face authentication scheme used when activating mobile phone service. The commission said it found insufficient review of privacy safeguards for handling biometric facial data, which is treated as sensitive information under the privacy law. It pointed to unclear legal grounds, limited ability to refuse consent, and a need to minimise data processed by contractors\' systems.
