Digital euro to use European standards instead of Visa, Mastercard
The European Central Bank will adopt three European open payment standards for the digital euro infrastructure to reduce reliance on Visa and Mastercard in the euro zone, BeInCrypto reported on April 26. The ECB signed agreements with the European Cards Payment Cooperation, the Nexo Standards and the Berlin Group. The standards cover contactless payments, merchant and ATM transactions, and account-based transfers. Separately, major European banks are expanding moves to embed cryptocurrency trading into existing regulated platforms.

Brazil blocks Kalshi and Polymarket, citing investor protection
Brazil has blocked prediction market and betting platforms including Kalshi and Polymarket, saying they did not comply with local derivatives trading rules and could harm investor protection and market integrity. The central bank bans derivatives linked to real or virtual events such as sports, online games and politics. Finance Minister Dario Durigan said about 28 platforms were blocked. Polymarket is already blocked in more than 30 countries.

Youth social media curbs have little carbon-cut impact as servers keep running
Banning minors from using social media is unlikely to reduce carbon emissions because data centres and network infrastructure continue consuming power regardless of users\' ages, according to a report. Even if youth accounts are blocked, apps do not disappear and servers do not shut down. Critics also say overall screen time may not fall if teens switch to other content. They argue more direct measures should target data centres, platform energy use and video streaming.
