[DigitalToday reporter Jinju Hong] Sony will launch its PlayStation wireless gaming speaker, Pulse Elite, in November, expanding its gaming audio lineup.
On Aug. 18 (local time), IT outlet The Verge reported that Sony will release Pulse Elite on Nov. 12. The U.S. price is set at $219.99 (about 300,000 won). Preorders begin on Sept. 1.
Pulse Elite is a wireless gaming speaker Sony unveiled about a year ago. It supports PS5, PlayStation Portal, PCs and macOS-based devices, and is designed for use across various platforms beyond consoles.
The key is sound quality. Sony said Pulse Elite uses planar magnetic drivers inspired by studio equipment. It aims to deliver lifelike sound across the audible frequency range.
It also includes features needed for gaming. It supports voice chat through a built-in microphone and applies PlayStation Link technology for low-latency wireless connections. A dedicated dock for charging the battery is also provided.
The product comes in two colors, black and white. The black model will be sold globally through PlayStation Direct and participating retailers. The white model, by contrast, has limited distribution channels, including being sold only through PlayStation Direct in some countries.
In the United States as well as the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and Portugal, the white model can be purchased on PlayStation Direct. In other regions, it will be sold through selected retailers.
The product is also drawing attention because Sony is expanding PlayStation gaming audio, which has centered on headsets, into speakers. By supporting not only PS5 but also PlayStation Portal, PCs and Macs, it has increased versatility for use inside and outside the PlayStation ecosystem.
Sony has recently continued to expand its lineup of PlayStation accessories. Pulse Elite can also be seen as a product that offers console users a new option for game sound.
Ultimately, Pulse Elite's competitiveness is expected to depend on how much it can deliver a differentiated experience in the gaming speaker market, highlighting its $219.99 price, wireless connectivity, dedicated dock, built-in microphone and planar drivers. It will be officially released on Nov. 12 after September preorders.
