U.S. SEC sets 2027 exam priorities, flags AI superintelligence and tokenisation risks

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has added AI superintelligence and tokenisation to its examination priorities for fiscal 2027, expanding its review of technology risks in capital markets. The SEC’s Division of Examinations said it will assess how AI tools used by registered firms affect compliance programmes and fraud detection. It also listed risks tied to evolving market infrastructure, including tokenisation and related developments. The priorities apply to more than 34,000 registered entities.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has reaffirmed its plan to build a comprehensive cryptocurrency regulatory framework despite legislative uncertainty in Washington. SEC Chair Paul Atkins said on X that the agency would continue its fight to provide a common-sense and comprehensive U.S. crypto market structure. His remarks come as uncertainty rises around the CLARITY bill, which failed to clear a procedural threshold in the Senate on Sept. 15.

U.S. SEC approves KPI-linked options for crypto-related stocks, launch expected this month

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has approved options linked to key performance indicators for 23 listed crypto-related companies including Coinbase, Robinhood and Mara. Payouts depend on whether preset KPI thresholds are met rather than earnings releases. The contracts are to be listed by Cboe Global Markets and pay $1 if the prediction is correct. Trading cannot begin until Cboe Clear U.S. completes a separate registration step.
