Hester Peirce (헤스터 피어스), a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission commissioner known for a crypto-friendly stance and dubbed 'Crypto Mom,' will step down from her post on Oct. 2, local time, next month.

According to U.Today on Sept. 25, Peirce posted a photo on social media of her resignation letter submitted to the White House, along with a short message reading "T minus 7". The disclosed letter specified Oct. 2 as the effective date of her resignation.

In the letter, Peirce expressed thanks for the opportunity to work as an SEC commissioner, saying, "Serving at the SEC has been the greatest honor of my professional life." She also reiterated her long-held view that it is important to have an environment in which individuals can make their own investment decisions within an appropriate regulatory framework.

She also expressed hope that under the leadership of SEC Chairman Paul Atkins (폴 앳킨스) and Commissioner Mark Uyeda (마크 우예다), SEC staff would continue to strike a balance between investor protection and freedom of choice.

Peirce's resignation had been anticipated to some extent. She first took office as an SEC commissioner in January 2018 and began a second term in 2020. Her second term expired on June 5, 2025, but SEC commissioners can remain in their posts for about 18 months after a term ends if a successor has not been appointed. As of mid-September, the SEC website lists three current commissioners: Chairman Atkins, Peirce and Uyeda.

During her tenure at the SEC, Peirce repeatedly voiced criticism of an enforcement-centered approach to crypto regulation, earning the nickname 'Crypto Mom' in the industry. She continued to take part in policy discussions related to digital assets until recently, and in a speech on Sept. 23 she said her SEC term was entering its final stage.

Her next move has also been set. Regent University announced in May that Peirce would join its law school as an associate professor starting in November. Peirce, who served as an SEC commissioner for about 8 years and 9 months, is set to leave the regulator and move into legal education.
