Naver to buy 30 percent stake in GS Wind Power, signs 25-year direct PPA

Naver said on Tuesday it will acquire a 30 percent stake in GS Wind Power and sign a direct renewable power purchase agreement. The deal is the first case in South Korea in which a RE100 member invests directly in a renewable power generation company to secure energy. The wind farm under construction in Yeongyang, North Gyeongsang Province is to supply electricity to Naver’s Sejong and Chuncheon data centres from commercial operations starting in the first half of 2028.

AIDC special act clears science and ICT panel; power exemption debate looms in judiciary review

South Korea’s National Assembly Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee on April 14 passed a special act on AI data centres (AIDC). The bill must still be reviewed by the Legislation and Judiciary Committee and approved at a plenary session. The consolidated proposal focuses on easing power and licensing rules, including exemptions for non-capital AIDCs and broader direct power purchase contracts. Disputes are expected over expanded power-related exemptions.

Baek Kyung-hoon says power supply is key to special law for AI data centres

Baek Kyung-hoon (배경훈), deputy prime minister and science minister, said power supply is the core issue in a special law for AI data centres and that the provision cannot be compromised. He said he will work for the bill to pass in its original form. The bill includes streamlined permits, relaxed siting rules and support to secure power and water, but ministries remain divided over a power purchase agreement exemption.
