Science ministry says proton accelerator reaches 40,000 hours of cumulative operation
A 100-megaelectronvolt-class linear proton accelerator operated by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute in Gyeongju has reached 40,000 cumulative operating hours over 13 years since its first run in 2013 without a single safety accident, the Ministry of Science and ICT said. The facility supports radiation-environment testing for semiconductors and other applications. Operations expanded to a 24-hour service system from September 2024, and it supported 353 people and 210 experiments last year.

South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT begins support for new projects under its 2026 R&D special zone fostering program. The 51.2 billion won package targets 174 companies in five special zones including Daejeon, Gwangju, Daegu, Busan and North Jeolla. The program focuses on full-cycle growth from demonstration and investment to global expansion, and prioritises fields such as AI, advanced bio, semiconductors and displays, advanced robotics and secondary batteries.

South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT and the Office of Planning and Budget held a strategy meeting on April 30 to discuss next year\'s research and development investment and the 2027 R&D budget. It plans to restructure government R&D by linking spending cuts and efficiency measures to reinvestment, and to strengthen evaluations and inter-ministerial collaboration.
