2026 state audit puts PHP security, LG Uplus hacking cover-up allegations and AI policy in spotlight

Lawmakers grilled officials at a parliamentary audit over the government’s response to PHP security flaws, the decision-making process for a 4.7 trillion won frontier AI project and allegations LG Uplus covered up a hacking incident. The science ministry said it would prepare cross-government security measures and pursue regulatory improvements to foster the AI industry. LG Uplus said it would take appropriate responsibility if the allegations are confirmed.

Baek Kyung-hoon says tax breaks for lease-type AI data centres under review, power rules to be eased

South Korea plans to pursue tax support for lease-type AI data centres and ease power regulations to spur investment, Vice Prime Minister and Science Minister Baek Kyung-hoon said. He told a parliamentary audit the government will discuss tax benefits for lease-type facilities with fiscal authorities to attract foreign capital. He also cited differences among ministries over thresholds for exempting non-capital region centres from grid impact assessments.

Guhyeok-chae attends quantum strategic technology forum, vows to detail medium-to-long-term strategy

Guhyeok-chae (구혁채), first vice minister at the Ministry of Science and ICT, discussed a medium- to long-term development strategy for quantum technology with representatives from industry, academia and research. He attended the 2026 Quantum National Strategic Technology National Assembly Policy Forum held on Sept. 9 at the National Assembly Museum. The forum followed the government’s selection last month of quantum as a next-generation frontier field under its seven SEED future growth engines.
