Broadcast Media and Telecommunications Commission publishes first user protection guide for online subscription services

South Korea\'s Broadcast Media and Telecommunications Commission on Tuesday published its first user protection policy guide for operators of online subscription services. The commission said complaints and damage cases have been increasing due to automatic payments and complicated cancellation procedures. The guide lists prohibited practices and major regulatory cases, breaks services into sign-up, use and cancellation stages, and analyses user interfaces to outline types of harm. It also sets out examples of legal violations.

Bamito Wi moves to block illegal tracker device sales

The Broadcasting Media and Telecommunications Commission said on Thursday it will strengthen online platform self-regulation and conduct inspections to curb the distribution of illegal location trackers used for stalking and other violent crimes. It plans to display warning messages on major shopping sites and send caution notices on second-hand trading platforms. The commission will also check about 3,200 location information businesses and seek crackdowns on illegal devices with the science ministry.

Broadcast media, telecom deliberation committee elects Ko Gwang-heon as chair nominee

South Korea’s Broadcast Media and Telecommunications Deliberation Committee held its first regular meeting on March 12 and chose Ko Gwang-heon as chair nominee and Kim Min-jung as vice chair. The panel will move to form an Election Broadcasting Deliberation Committee for the June 3 local elections after a delay of more than a month. It also aims to restart broadcast and telecommunications deliberations halted for nine months, with about 207,000 cases pending.
