Facial recognition to apply to new mobile sign-ups and number porting to block illegal phones
From next month, South Korea will apply strengthened identity verification, including facial recognition, when consumers open a new mobile phone line or switch carriers through mobile operators and MVNOs. The Ministry of Science and ICT announced a comprehensive plan to prevent fraudulent phone use, including measures targeting identity theft, misuse of corporate names and tougher sanctions on carriers and retailers caught enabling illegal activations. It will also expand subscription-blocking services and tighten controls on foreign and corporate phone lines.

Korean mobile carriers near full QoS rollout, MVNO market on alert
South Korea plans to apply a data assurance option, or QoS, across the three mobile carriers’ rate plans in the first half, guaranteeing unlimited data at 400 Kbps after allowances are used. The policy aims to lower household telecom bills, the science ministry says. MVNO users would generally need to pay about 5,000 won a month for the QoS feature, prompting complaints of discrimination. MVNOs also face limited wholesale discounts and rising spectrum fees.

SKT MVNO shared SIM era begins as SKtelink launches Easy SIM
SKtelink said on Sunday it will launch an Easy SIM that is compatible across mobile virtual network operators using SK Telecom’s network, selling it through Emart24. Customers can buy the SIM at about 5,500 Emart24 stores nationwide and immediately activate it by selecting a plan from their preferred MVNO. SK Telecom previously required separate SIMs by MVNO brand, forcing customers to replace SIMs when switching providers.
