Cofix rises for fourth straight month, variable mortgage rates set to climb again
South Korea’s Cofix (Cost of Funds Index), a benchmark for banks’ variable-rate mortgage loans, rose for a fourth consecutive month, suggesting additional increases in variable mortgage rates. The Korea Federation of Banks said the July Cofix based on new loans came to 3.18 percent, up 0.13 percentage points from 3.05 percent a month earlier. The balance-based and new-balance-based measures also rose.

July household loans rise 6.2 trillion won; growth slows for second month
Household loans across South Korea’s financial sector rose 6.2 trillion won in July from the previous month, marking a second straight slowdown in the pace of increase, the Financial Services Commission said. The rise was still larger than a year earlier and above past averages, regulators said, citing increased housing transactions in the Seoul metropolitan area. Authorities said they will maintain monitoring while adjusting aggregate lending targets to support end-user funding needs.

Woori Bank CEO Jung Jin-wan (정진완) joined a relay campaign promoting \"lifesaving finance\" to support financially vulnerable groups and prevent harm from illegal private lending. Woori Bank said on Aug. 12 that he took part in the public-interest campaign launched by the Korea Inclusive Finance Agency. The campaign was started in July by the agency’s head, Kim Eun-kyung. Jung joined after being nominated by Korea Federation of Banks Chairman Cho Yong-byung.
