Chinese AI firms shift from open source to closed models, prioritising profitability
Chinese AI companies such as Alibaba and Zhipu AI are increasingly withholding their latest models from open-source release and focusing on monetisation through cloud platforms, the South China Morning Post reported. Alibaba launched three proprietary models this week that are accessible only via its cloud and chatbot site. The company cited relatively weaker developer interest in its Omni series on Hugging Face. Zhipu AI said customers are shifting from self-hosting to cloud APIs.

Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) released a Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps series based on January web and mobile metrics, expanding coverage to services adding generative AI such as CapCut, Canva and Notion. ChatGPT remains No.1 but competition is intensifying, with growing multi-tenant use alongside Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude. The data also show distinct regional ecosystems and shifts in creative tools from image generation toward video, music and voice products.

Smilegate Futurelab recruits participants for youth AI video production workshop
Smilegate Futurelab said on Thursday it is recruiting participants for “Prompt to Film 2026,” an AI video production workshop for teenagers. The program lets participants make short AI films and take part in a screening. It consists of a foundation workshop to learn and use tools such as Gemini, Midjourney and Kling AI, and an AI film workshop to produce a short film. Finished works are to be screened at BIKY’s Futurelab section.
