EU new rules spur removable battery designs, with headphones, e-readers and game devices redesigned
Design changes are accelerating in the electronics market as the European Union prepares to implement new battery rules requiring users to replace batteries themselves. The shift is emerging first in peripherals such as headphones, e-readers and handheld game devices, rather than smartphones. From Feb. 18, 2027, many portable devices with batteries must be designed for user removal and replacement, with makers also required to sell compatible batteries for at least five years.

Signs point to user-replaceable battery in Amazon\'s next-generation Kindle
Amazon may add a user-replaceable battery to its next-generation Kindle e-reader, after references to a battery replacement kit, guidance documents and a battery diagnostics menu were spotted in a Kindle 5.19.4 firmware update, TechRadar reported. Users said they saw related strings in firmware that was briefly published and then pulled. The move could align with an EU repairability timetable. Amazon is ending support for Kindles released before 2012 from May 20.

Amazon to end support for older Kindle devices
Amazon will end support on May 20 for Kindle models released before 2012. Users will still be able to read e-books already downloaded, but will no longer be able to buy or download new titles on the devices. After the change was emailed to users, criticism spread in online communities, TechRadar reported. Users cite continued functionality, the single-purpose nature of e-readers and concerns about electronic waste. Some plan to use sideloading as a workaround.
