UST expands deep-tech student startup cooperation with seven national research institutes
University of Science and Technology (UST) said it signed a joint agreement with seven national research institutes to promote student startups based on public technology. The deal follows an earlier agreement with five institutes, bringing participating institutes to 12. The partners plan to build a professor-student startup model spanning technology transfer and equity contributions, and to provide mentoring, education, equipment and funding support. UST also cited rule changes and startup programs to strengthen support.

South Korea science ministry breaks ground on Korea New Light Accelerator, aims for 2029 completion
South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Basic Science Institute on July 27 held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Korea New Light Accelerator in Ochang, Cheongju. The fourth-generation circular synchrotron will use radiation generated by accelerating electrons close to the speed of light to analyse materials at the atomic level. The ministry plans to invest 1.16 trillion won, aiming to complete the project by end-2029, with KBSI overseeing construction.

Yoon Hye-on appointed chair of Korea Foundation for the Promotion of Women in Science and Technology
South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT appointed Yoon Hye-on (윤혜온), a senior research fellow at the Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI), as the new chair of the Korea Foundation for the Promotion of Women in Science and Technology on June 15. Yoon previously served as head of the Korean Women Scientists and Engineers Association and as a chair professor at KIRD. Her appointment followed review and recommendation by an executive nomination committee. Her term runs for 3 years from June 15, 2026.
