Household loans jump 9.3 trillion won in a month as regulators trigger emergency management
Household loans across South Korea’s financial sector rose 9.3 trillion won in May, sharply above April’s increase and a year earlier. Mortgage lending growth slowed, but other loans, including credit loans, swung to an increase and drove the overall rise. Regulators held a debt monitoring meeting and plan weekly checks on firms that miss management targets. Banks will pursue voluntary measures such as cutting new credit loan limits for high earners.

Kakao begins first-ever partial strike at headquarters as five affiliates take joint action
Kakao\'s union will begin a partial strike at the company\'s headquarters at 10 a.m. on June 10, the first such action since Kakao was founded. Four affiliates including Kakao Pay, Kakao Enterprise, DK Techin and XL Games will join, with five entities carrying out the strike together. The walkout will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., excluding a one-hour lunch break. The dispute follows a breakdown in wage talks, centring on bonus allocation and RSU payments.

South Korea will launch a cross-government response system to strengthen research security, aiming to manage risks such as the leakage of research assets and undue foreign interference as international cooperation expands. The science ministry held a meeting with related agencies and experts to review policy direction, plans and operating systems. The government plans to improve conflict-of-interest management, tighten security rules and create a new “sensitive project” category in August.
