New identity verification agency designation process launched; Broadcast Media Communications Commission to start accepting applications in May
South Korea\'s Broadcast Media Communications Commission is starting procedures to designate new identity verification agencies. It held its fourth meeting of 2026 in writing on April 27, reported its screening plan and posted the schedule and process online. Applications will be accepted next month, with on-site inspections in June and a final decision in August. The commission also decided on administrative fines for mobile-phone retailers accused of violating a law on handset distribution.

Seoul YMCA urges LG Uplus to waive cancellation fees amid IMSI controversy
A Seoul YMCA consumer watchdog called on LG Uplus to waive cancellation fees as the company replaces all USIM cards amid a controversy over its International Mobile Subscriber Identity system design. It said demonstrations by experts showed security threats linked to poor IMSI management becoming real. It cited cases shown at a KAIST hacking conference and online communities. It urged immediate user notifications and asked the science ministry to issue administrative guidance on fee waivers.

SK Innovation E&S faces allegations of covering up 2022 hack, 15GB data leak suspected
SK Innovation E&S is suspected of failing to report a hacking incident it detected in November 2022 until March 26 this year, according to materials obtained by the office of lawmaker Min Hee-hee (최민희). The breach is said to have occurred on Sept. 30, 2022, exploiting vulnerabilities in an outdated server lacking security updates. The incident later spread, and data leaks of 13GB and 2GB were confirmed in two intrusions.
