Ford Escape discontinued; could it return as an electric vehicle?

Ford has ended production of its compact SUV Escape, drawing attention to whether the nameplate could return as a battery-electric model. Ford says new EV drivetrain is about 30 percent more efficient than BYD

Ford Motor says a new electric-vehicle drivetrain used on its new Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform is about 30 percent more efficient than BYD products. The company aims to cut battery size and manufacturing costs to compete in the low-priced EV market. The first model using UEV will be the Fathom midsize electric pickup due in 2027, with a base price of $28,350. Ford did not disclose comparison conditions.

Ford says next-generation EVs will have self-diagnostics to catch assembly errors

Ford will add a function to its next-generation electric vehicle platform that lets a vehicle check its own assembly condition. From the moment power is supplied, an onboard computer will verify internal connections and immediately alert workers to errors. CEO Jim Farley said the approach differs from vision systems that check fastening after workers. Ford said factory cameras will still be used. It will disclose more assembly details on the universal EV platform in January.
