FBI, power plants hit in worst hacking incidents of first half 2026

New York woman loses $300,000 in cryptocurrency scam
A 73-year-old woman in New York lost $300,000 in retirement savings after responding to a WhatsApp message advertising cryptocurrency investment lessons, investigators said. Authorities said tailored investment scams using AI tools are increasing. They traced 14 wallet addresses used in the transfers to five laundering wallets linked to about $5 million taken from multiple victims. U.S. agencies also warned of common red flags such as unsolicited contact, urgency and requests for secrecy.

U.S. musician loses 5.9 bitcoin after entering recovery phrase into fake Ledger Live app
Garrett Dutton, a U.S. musician known as G. Love, said he lost 5.9 bitcoin worth $420,000 after installing a malicious app impersonating Ledger Live that he downloaded from Apple’s App Store. He said he entered his wallet recovery seed phrase and his holdings were taken. ZachXBT said the bitcoin moved through nine transactions to a KuCoin-related deposit address. The FBI said U.S. crypto losses exceeded $11 billion in 2025.
