IQM, Deutsche Bahn apply quantum computing to German rail operations, test 98,500 schedule combinations
A hybrid quantum scheduling test was carried out using German rail operations data, combining high-performance computing with a quantum processor to tackle an industrial-scale optimisation problem. IQM Quantum Computers and Deutsche Bahn tested 190 rail routes across five cities, covering 98,500 schedule combinations. Researchers used the quantum approximate optimisation algorithm and reported results in an IQM white paper, saying current hardware produced usable timetables and could scale as quantum performance improves.
