Apple faces climate goal test after Tim Cook exit, with AI as wild card
Apple, after Tim Cook stepped down as CEO, faces a new test in keeping its climate goals as it enters the AI race. Taiwan\'s government has set a record technology budget for 2027, stepping up investment to strengthen AI and semiconductor competitiveness. The plan makes building “sovereign AI” computing infrastructure a core task and aims to expand national-level investment to respond to global AI competition and geopolitical risks. The budget includes funding for the Smart Nation 2.0 programme, next-generation strategic technologies, semiconductor projects, net-zero technologies, regional industrial development, and space and communications initiatives.

KAIST names mechanical engineering professor Bae Choong-sik as 18th president
KAIST has appointed mechanical engineering professor Bae Choong-sik (배충식) as its next president. The university’s board made the decision at an extraordinary meeting on June 29 at KAIST’s Kim Jaechul AI Graduate School campus in Yangjae-dong, Seoul. Bae has worked in eco-friendly energy and carbon-neutral power engineering and has held several senior roles at KAIST. His appointment is subject to required ministerial consent and approval.
