Telecom bill discount blind spots persist as 2.1 million vulnerable people miss benefits

More than 2.1 million disabled, older and low-income people eligible for telecom bill discounts did not receive the benefit in the first half of this year, with missed discounts estimated at about 174.3 billion won. Total eligible beneficiaries numbered 10,674,877, while 8,574,247 actually received discounts. The number of non-recipients has risen steadily since 2022. Lawmaker Hwang Jung-a said the application-based system can be a barrier and called for automatic linkage for consenting eligible people.

BMC commission to bring forward separate storage of resident numbers and CI to January 2027

South Korea\'s Broadcasting Media Communication Commission said on Thursday it will bring forward by four months the start of mandatory separate storage of resident registration numbers and linked information (CI), to January 2027 from May. The commission approved an amendment to a notice revising standards on the generation and processing of CI. It said the measure aims to block the risk of both sets of information being leaked together and to strengthen security.

BMCC hosts international conference on broadcast co-productions

The Broadcasting Media Communication Commission said it held the 2026 International Broadcast Co-production Conference in Seoul on Thursday under the theme of cross-border cooperation in a glocal era. About 200 people from broadcasters, production companies, related organisations and academia attended. Participants shared co-production cases and discussed the use of new technologies such as AI and storytelling for global viewers. The event also presented awards for two co-productions. The commission chairman also signed an MoU with AIBD.
