Broadcast media, telecom deliberation committee elects Ko Gwang-heon as chair nominee
South Korea’s Broadcast Media and Telecommunications Deliberation Committee held its first regular meeting on March 12 and chose Ko Gwang-heon as chair nominee and Kim Min-jung as vice chair. The panel will move to form an Election Broadcasting Deliberation Committee for the June 3 local elections after a delay of more than a month. It also aims to restart broadcast and telecommunications deliberations halted for nine months, with about 207,000 cases pending.

National Assembly speaker approves 2 nominees to broadcast media-telecom panel, five-member body nears launch
National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik approved two recommendations for non-standing members of the Broadcast Media and Telecommunications Commission on Feb. 27, making it likely the panel will meet its quorum. The nominees, recommended by the Democratic Party and the People Power Party, will undergo vetting before President Lee Jae-myung makes final appointments. If three new members join, the commission will have five members and meet minimum voting requirements.

Pay-TV industry moves ahead of broadcast media telecoms commission normalisation
South Korea’s pay-TV industry is drafting messages and proposals to deliver to the Broadcast Media and Telecommunications Commission ahead of its expected normalisation. Industry associations are shaping requests on regulatory imbalance with global OTT platforms, channel regulation and content fee standards. IPTV operators also want easing of bundled pricing regulation and say some reporting rules work like approvals. Industry groups plan briefings and seminars to share proposals with the government, parliament and the commission.
