U.S.-China AI race hard to win alone as South Korea, Japan roles stand out

The United States and China will struggle to gain an edge in the race for AI leadership without relying on other countries’ technology and supply chains, an analysis said. Matty Zhao of Bank of America Global Research said the global tech supply chain is deeply intertwined. He cited China’s dependence on foreign advanced chips and some materials, and U.S. constraints from an ageing power grid and rising electricity concerns tied to data centres.

7,000 humanoid robots sold, but most go to labs not factories

About 7,000 humanoid robots were sold worldwide last year, but many were used in research institutions or to generate data for improving AI models rather than in industrial workplaces. The International Federation of Robotics counted the 2025 sales and, for the first time, tracked humanoids as a separate category. Pilot projects at carmakers remain small. IFR cautioned sales totals do not show actual deployment, usage frequency or value creation.
