Budget smartphones shrink as premium models grow, reshaping market
The global smartphone market is shifting toward higher-priced models as the share of devices under $200 declines and premium phones gain ground, data from Omdia show. Component cost increases, especially memory, are hurting profitability for cheaper handsets. Omdia expects total shipments to fall this year, but revenue and average selling prices to rise. In South Korea, value phones from carriers cluster around 400,000 to 500,000 won.

Stage Five acquires Loflat to combine location technology with telecom services
Stage Five has acquired AI location data specialist Loflat and will move to develop new businesses. The company said on Sept. 2 it secured Loflat’s shares through a comprehensive share swap and will make it a subsidiary. Loflat will maintain its existing business structure after the acquisition. Stage Five plans to apply Loflat’s location technology to its telecom services, including its budget phone brand Pindirect, to improve service quality and develop new services.

Ecopro BM begins Hungary plant line conversion
Ecopro BM has begun work to convert an existing NCA production line at its Hungary plant into a line that can also produce NCM, it said on Sunday. The move aims to supply high-nickel cathode materials for premium electric vehicles in Europe from the fourth quarter of next year. The conversion is expected to cost about 40 billion won. The Hungary plant began commercial operations in the first half of this year and is running at 54,000 tons of annual capacity.
