ETRI shifts away from PBS, lifts mission-oriented R&D to 90 percent, seeks third AI computing centre

Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute will overhaul its research system after the abolition of the project-based system, shifting from commissioned projects to national mission-oriented research. It plans to raise the share of mission-oriented projects from 22 percent this year to 90 percent by 2030 and cut competitive commissioned work to about 10 percent. President Se-woong Park said ETRI will focus on five priority areas and pursue a third AI computing centre backed by equipment investment.

South Korea weighs public-private SPC for frontier AI model development

South Korea is reviewing the use of a special purpose company jointly funded by the public and private sectors to develop frontier-level AI models, government and industry officials said. Proposals being discussed include the government investing about 5 trillion won for a roughly 30 percent stake, with the private sector providing the remaining 70 percent. The move reflects a policy shift to diversify national R&D support from grants toward equity investment.

Groundbreaking held for national AI computing center in Haenam, aims for 2028 completion

South Korea has broken ground on its national AI computing center in Solarsido, Haenam, and begun full-scale construction, the Ministry of Science and ICT said on Sunday. The project will be built as a public-private joint venture combining public investment with private capital and data center operating capabilities. A Samsung SDS-led consortium was selected as the final operator and established a joint venture, KOACC. Some computing resources will be deployed next year ahead of completion in 2028.
