President Lee reviews expanding alternative service for science and technology talent, revamping military system

President Lee Jae-myung said on Feb. 5 he is reviewing expanding alternative military service for male science and technology talent and overhauling the military system. Speaking at a dialogue event with future scientists, he said the military should shift from an infantry- and headcount-based model to one centered on equipment, weapons and trained experts. He also mentioned research units within the military and said the government is preparing policies to address overseas talent outflows.

Hanwha Solutions posts 478.3 billion won Q4 operating loss, swings to loss

Hanwha Solutions said on Wednesday it posted fourth-quarter revenue of 3.78 trillion won and an operating loss of 478.3 billion won, swinging to an operating loss from a year earlier. It said solar module sales fell due to customs clearance delays, while profitability in its chemical business worsened as oversupply drove down international trading prices. Full-year revenue rose 7.8 percent to 13.35 trillion won, and the operating loss widened 17.7 percent to 353.3 billion won.

Solus Advanced Materials' 2025 operating loss widens 31 percent to 71.5 billion won

Solus Advanced Materials said on Feb. 5 it posted 2025 consolidated revenue of 616.4 billion won and an operating loss of 71.5 billion won. Revenue rose 8 percent from a year earlier, but the loss widened 31.3 percent. It cited weaker EV demand, lower plant utilisation, higher fixed costs, and increased funding and foreign-exchange-related costs. The company plans to complete the sale of its copper foil unit in the first half and focus on battery foil.
