Coinbase-based Sivar launches for U.S.-El Salvador remittances at $2
Sivar, a stablecoin-based service supporting remittances between El Salvador and the United States, has launched nationwide. Modveon said it develops, operates and expands the service under a five-year contract with El Salvador public agency AAB. Coinbase provides the payments infrastructure, with transactions settled in stablecoins on Ethereum layer-2 Base. Remittances carry a flat $2 fee, with a $25 minimum. Accounts differ over direct government operation.

U.S. alcohol-related cancer deaths double over 33 years - study
Alcohol-related cancer deaths in the United States doubled over about three decades, a study found. Researchers analysing Global Burden of Disease data estimated deaths rose from 11,361 in 1990 to 23,126 in 2023. In 2023, the age-standardised death rate per 100,000 people was 6.4 for men and 2.1 for women. Liver cancer and breast cancer showed the highest alcohol-attributable mortality in older adults, and liver cancer saw the largest increase.

15-year dormant bitcoin wallet stirs, unrealised return at 2.19 million percent
A bitcoin wallet that had shown no activity for nearly 15 years transferred 20.43 bitcoin worth about $1.7 million. Blockchain outlet U.Today reported the wallet had been inactive since May 2011. Galaxy Research counted two transfers on Sept. 29, split into 10.33 and 10.10 bitcoin. The unrealised gain on the 10.33 bitcoin was estimated at $872,000, for an unrealised return of 2,192,671 percent.
