A puzzle wallet designed to allow a private key to be inferred using public data from the genesis block mined by Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto has appeared on the Bitcoin blockchain.
On Aug. 23, blockchain media outlet U.Today reported that Galaxy Research analysts detected on-chain activity tied to the puzzle wallet in Bitcoin block 963,629. The transaction recorded 255 bytes of text via an OP_RETURN field, accounting for more than half of the total transaction size of about 500 bytes. The mining fee was 250 satoshis.
The puzzle uses public information contained in Bitcoin’s genesis block to generate the wallet, instead of a typical random seed phrase. In a manifesto left in the transaction, the puzzle’s creator said the Bitcoin puzzle and wallet were made using information from the genesis block created by Satoshi, and said the "entropy is extremely low."
In cryptography, entropy relates to how hard it is to guess a secret value. Low entropy means the number of possible private keys was intentionally reduced. In other words, instead of using a fully random value, the puzzle uses data already made public in the 2009 genesis block as clues for the key. The creator added, "There was no need to even make a backup," and "Everything needed was already in the first block."
It is not clear what the specific decoding clue is. Some have raised the possibility that the genesis block hash or Satoshi’s well-known line included in the block, "The Times 03/Jan/2009," could have been used as a clue.
The approach is similar to so-called brain wallets, which generate a wallet’s secret value based on information a user can remember or infer. The more public information there is, the narrower the range an attacker may try, so it may be less secure than a typical random private key method.
The puzzle does not stop at simply disclosing a wallet. The creator also set up a structure to provide clues for a fee. Users can send bitcoin to a designated wallet address to receive hints, with larger transfers yielding more accurate and valuable clues.
Moves to solve the puzzle are also emerging in the Bitcoin community. Market participants are re-examining early records left by Satoshi Nakamoto and data from the genesis block to find values linked to the puzzle wallet.
The case is drawing attention because early Bitcoin blockchain data could be used as material for new on-chain experiments, beyond serving as a simple historical record. It also stands out for using OP_RETURN to leave a human-readable manifesto on the blockchain and link it to the puzzle and fund flows.
Whether the community can find actual clues and decode the private key is expected to be the main point to watch in this puzzle.
