Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong (브라이언 암스트롱) forecast that bitcoin is likely to reach as high as $400,000 by 2030.
On Aug. 20 local time, blockchain media outlet Bitcoin Magazine reported that Armstrong made the forecast on Fox Business Network, citing improvements in the U.S. legislative environment for cryptocurrencies. Asked about the medium- to long-term outlook, he said, "In the next few years, around 2030, there is a very high chance bitcoin reaches $300,000 to $400,000."
Armstrong cited expectations for institutionalisation after a White House meeting. U.S. President Donald Trump met cryptocurrency industry executives and traditional finance figures at the White House on Aug. 19 and urged Congress to advance the Clarity bill. Bitcoin later rose to around $72,900.
Armstrong said, "At the meeting attended by President Trump and the heads of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), the biggest topic was the Clarity bill." He said he could confirm the Trump administration's strong will to quickly finalise and pass the bill. Trump has previously called the Clarity bill a "very strong bill."
The Clarity bill sets standards for classifying digital assets as securities, commodities or payment stablecoins. It is a regulatory framework long demanded by the cryptocurrency industry, and markets view it as a key turning point for incorporation into the institutional system.
Some lawmakers initially expected a vote in August, but it has slipped to September as the schedule has been repeatedly delayed. Behind the delay is a clash between banks and the cryptocurrency industry over stablecoin interest income. Some banks have been concerned that if cryptocurrency companies pay excessive rewards on the stablecoins they hold, the deposit base could weaken.
Armstrong said opposition from banks is not one-sided. He said, "In fact, several banks support the Clarity bill," and that most banks understand it grants authority to grow their business with new technology. He added that those opposing it still remain only a minority.
Armstrong's forecast is seen as reflecting expectations that institutionalisation of cryptocurrencies in the United States will accelerate. The outcome of the Clarity bill has emerged as a key variable that could affect future market sentiment and the industry's landscape. Market attention is focused on whether a vote will take place in September and whether differences within the industry over stablecoin rewards can be reconciled.
