[Digital Today reporter Yoonseo Lee] Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin (비탈릭 부테린) said he released a revised version of the 2023 Ethereum roadmap and raised the priority of quantum safety.

On Aug. 10 (local time), blockchain outlet Cryptopolitan reported that Buterin overlaid the existing roadmap on the Ethereum Foundation's latest layer-1 (L1) Strawmap, presenting items that remained as well as those whose priority changed.

The most noticeable change is quantum safety. Buterin directly mentioned that quantum safety was upgraded in priority. Some other tasks were pushed back, though the examples he disclosed were only a part.

In Ethereum's 2023 roadmap, post-quantum technology was one of several tasks. At the time, Buterin reduced the emphasis on verifiable delay functions. He cited weaknesses in existing cryptographic structures and newly added research topics such as obfuscation and a delay-encrypted mempool. The core of this revision is that, as 2.5 years passed, the roadmap's direction became clearer toward preparing for the threat of future quantum computers.

The reference document Buterin overlaid is the L1 Strawmap. Posted on strawmap.org, the document is jointly managed by the Ethereum Foundation architecture team's Justin, Thomas and Tony, along with Buterin. They saw it as difficult for a single roadmap to represent the entire decentralized ecosystem, and made the document a tool to start discussions. The L1 Strawmap was used as a starting point for discussion at an Ethereum Foundation workshop in January 2026.

The L1 Strawmap arranges upgrades for the consensus, data and execution layers on a timeline and presents 5 final goals. The goals are a fast L1 supporting finality within seconds, a gigagas-level L1 processing 10,000 transactions per second, a teragas-level L2 targeting 10,000,000 transactions per second, a post-quantum L1 with hash-based security, and a privacy L1 with shielded transfers built in. The draft envisions 7 forks at roughly six-month intervals through 2029, and includes upgrade names such as Glamsterdam and Hegotá.

Quantum-resistant security is not remaining at the level of a concept. Buterin proposed EIP-8288 on June 5, 2026. The proposal is designed so transactions declare cryptographic dependencies and block builders replace them with a single recursive STARK proof to maintain gas efficiency.

The Ethereum Foundation also formed a dedicated post-quantum security team in January this year. The target date is 2029. The team's scope includes consensus signatures, data availability commitments, account signatures and zero-knowledge proofs at the application layer. As a result, this roadmap revision is closer to a signal that Ethereum has elevated a security transition at the core infrastructure level as an official top priority, rather than a simple diagram update.

Behind Buterin's reordering of Strawmap priorities at this point is also progress in quantum computing. Given that threats to cryptographic systems are being highlighted more strongly, the elevation of quantum safety was an expected flow.

Along with this, Buterin saw that artificial intelligence (AI) tools could speed up roadmap writing. He has said that AI helped draft the 2030 roadmap, cutting work that would take years down to 2 weeks.

Ultimately, the revision shows that Ethereum is continuing to push for higher throughput and expanded privacy while, over the medium to long term, placing quantum-resistant infrastructure as a core L1 task. Key points to watch are how concrete proposals such as EIP-8288 align with the actual upgrade schedule, and in what order the core infrastructure build targeted for 2029 is reflected within the Strawmap's fork plan.
