Anthropic's AI assistant Claude has moved up to second in revenue in South Korea's generative AI app market, overtaking Google's Gemini.

Sensor Tower said on Thursday that Claude ranked second in revenue among iOS generative AI apps in South Korea through early June this year and posted the highest revenue growth rate.

Claude first surpassed Gemini on March 23. On May 5, it reached an all-time high with daily revenue of about $104,000, or about 160 million won. That was more than double the previous day.

Downloads held at a similar level over the same period. Sensor Tower analysed that the revenue increase may have come from existing users converting to paid subscriptions or upgrading to higher-tier plans rather than new user inflows.

South Korea's share of the market also stands out. From Jan. 1 to June 5 this year, South Korea accounted for the second-largest share of Claude's revenue by country at 4.7 percent, after the United States at 41.1 percent. For Gemini, South Korea was the second-largest market at 14.5 percent after Japan at 15.0 percent. For ChatGPT, South Korea ranked third after the United States at 33.1 percent and Japan at 5.3 percent.

In the global market, Claude's web traffic growth was strong. Sensor Tower Web Insights showed that from March to May, Claude outpaced both ChatGPT and Gemini in visitor growth rate. Sensor Tower analysed that a large-scale TV advertising campaign run by Anthropic ahead of this year's Super Bowl contributed to higher brand awareness. Claude ranked second in impressions among U.S. linear TV generative AI brands this year.

In how users access services, 58.8 percent of Claude users used only the web, while 56.1 percent of ChatGPT users used only the app.

Claude users showed a stronger technology-friendly tendency, including cryptocurrency investors and those who prefer premium services. Sensor Tower said this contrasted with ChatGPT, which showed consumer lifestyle-oriented tendencies.
