Apple is expected to unveil its next operating system, iOS 27, at the Worldwide Developers Conference on June 8, local time. The update is expected to focus on a major overhaul of Siri and expanded artificial intelligence (AI) features across built-in apps.

According to IT outlet 9to5Mac, Apple is likely to redesign Siri in iOS 27 as an AI assistant based on a large language model (LLM). The new Siri is expected to be offered as a standalone app, with a chatbot-style interface and a design linked to the Dynamic Island.

The feature changes are also expected to be wide-ranging. The new Siri is expected to improve general knowledge question-and-answer capability and support handling multiple tasks at once with a single request. Apple may also reintroduce personal context understanding, on-screen awareness and App Intents features that it had delayed in earlier versions. The industry views the update as the effective starting point of Apple’s AI strategy centered on Siri.

AI editing features are also expected to be added to the Photos app. Features cited include “Extend,” which generates an expanded image beyond the original photo’s boundaries; “Enhance,” which automatically adjusts color, lighting and image quality; and “Reframe,” which readjusts composition after shooting. Reframe is said to focus in particular on spatial photos. The existing AI deletion feature “Clean Up” may also be improved.

Changes to the Camera app are also expected. Apple introduced visual recognition linked to the iPhone 16 camera control button in iOS 18, and iOS 27 is likely to expand this into the Camera app itself. Forecasts also suggest the new interface could add a “Siri” mode in addition to the existing photo and video modes.

Apple Wallet is expected to broaden its use. With an expected new “Create a Pass” feature, users are expected to be able to store various tickets, entry passes and everyday passes directly in Wallet. This is seen as a move to expand Wallet from a simple payment tool into a digital identity and credential platform.

The Health app is also set for a major overhaul. Apple at one point considered a separate subscription service called “Apple Health+,” but it has now changed course to provide key features for free in the built-in Health app, it was reported. New features under discussion include health education content produced by doctors and experts, AI-based health coaching, wellness suggestions and enhanced nutrition tracking.

The keyboard’s autocorrect feature may also evolve. It would go beyond simple typo fixes to recommend alternative words and expressions that fit the context. It is expected to resemble existing sentence correction tools, but whether it will be AI-based has not yet been confirmed.

Safari may also add automatic tab-group name generation. Using Apple Intelligence, it would analyze the content within a tab group and automatically assign a name. Users would also be able to edit the name if needed.

The industry sees the iOS 27 update as significant not simply for adding features, but because Apple is beginning to incorporate AI in earnest across the core iPhone experience. A key change is a chatbot-style Siri interface and AI-centered revamps of major apps such as Photos, Camera, Safari and Health.

At next month’s WWDC, the main focus is expected to be how specifically Apple can translate its generative AI strategy—previously seen as lagging—into real user experiences.
