LG Display’s gaming OLED panel won the top prize at a leading global display awards programme. LG Display said on April 29 its “27-inch 540/720Hz (DFR) OLED gaming monitor” panel was selected as the Society for Information Display’s (SID) Display of the Year. SID’s Display of the Year is awarded to the most innovative product expected to lead the industry’s future among products released the previous year.
SID said LG Display was recognised for presenting a new user-centric gaming display paradigm. The panel applies LG Display’s proprietary Dynamic Frequency & Resolution (DFR) technology. DFR allows users to freely choose between a high-refresh-rate mode and a high-resolution mode depending on the game genre.
The high-refresh-rate mode supports a 720Hz (HD) refresh rate. It focuses on reducing afterimages and blur in game genres that require rapid screen changes, such as first-person shooters and racing. The high-resolution mode delivers QHD resolution and a 540Hz refresh rate at the same time. LG Display said it developed and applied a proprietary algorithm to overcome the existing limitation in which picture quality deteriorates when the refresh rate exceeds 500Hz.
Both modes share specifications of up to 1,500 nit peak brightness and a 0.02 millisecond response time. The panel also obtained the Video Electronics Standards Association’s (VESA) top-tier certification, Clear Motion Ratio 21,000. ClearMR is an index that evaluates a display’s motion clarity.
Choi Young-seok (최영석), LG Display’s chief technology officer, said, “As a technology-driven company, we will continue to research and develop innovative OLED technology in the gaming display market as well, based on differentiated technological capabilities, and lead the market.”
